ADVENTURE FOR THE WHOLE FAMILY

Trails: What was originally a multi-level, small-grade family farm in Irene has now become one of the most popular mountain bike trails parks in South Africa. Big Red Barn, situated just outside Irene between Johannesburg and Pretoria, offers a network of trails that have been fine-tuned over the past 10 years.

Owner Dominic Cullinan, a keen mountain biker, was the original trails builder, naming the limited number of early trails after family members. But with the popularity of mountain biking growing and the demand for more trails, Big Red Barn is now a national level trails park with a vast network of trails to cater for beginner, intermediate and advanced riders of all ages.

What it lacks in gradient, it makes up for in singletrack. About 95% of the trails are singletrack. In order to make them more stimulating for intermediate and experienced riders, they have incorporated some cool jump/berm lines. There’s also a new jump line that’s proving popular among the younger riders and there is a singletrack loop at the trailhead for kids to enjoy within close proximity of the main restaurant.

Big Red Barn uses the IMBA grading system with Green, Blue and Black signage denoting trails ideal for Beginner, Intermediate and Advanced skilled riders respectively.

Most of the trails are Blue with very little in the way of risky features, which is probably why the venue is so popular for women and families.

People: The trails management is handled by owner, Dominic Cullinan and his building/maintenance team.

Local tip: Some of the trail intersections can be confusing. Rather take a bit longer to look at each one to ensure you follow your planned route. Also know that even if you do end up on a different route, it’s not a huge problem as the area isn’t too big and the trails mostly follow similar directions and all bring you back to the trailhead or the main gravel road that dissects the property.

Safety: The park is fenced on most sides with a river border on the north. It’s regarded as a safe venue but it’s always best to ride with someone else if you’re uncertain.

Operating hours: Open seven days a week from 06h45-16h30 May-August and 06h00-17h30 September-April.
